Jet-Setter’s Picks: My 10 Favorite Airports (and 3 You Should Know About)

The World Unfolding

Airports are more than just transit hubs—they’re the gateways to experiences, stories, and memories. They set the tone for our journeys and can either ease or amplify the stress of travel. This week, I’m reviewing three airports I visited this month—Long Beach (LGB), Sacramento (SMF), and Eugene (EUG)—as well as sharing my top 10 favorite airports and why they made the list.

Airport Reviews

1. Long Beach Airport (LGB)

Long Beach is a breath of fresh air in the crowded Southern California travel scene. From the moment you arrive, you sense a different kind of pace.

What Stood Out: The outdoor spaces. Sitting post-security under palm trees while waiting to board was like being on vacation before the trip even started. The open-air boarding system feels retro yet modern, adding to the airport’s charm.

Ease of Use: Everything is close together—no mile-long walks to your gate or frantically searching for signs. TSA was a breeze, and lots of outdoor areas.

Room for Improvement: Food options are limited. If your flight is delayed, you might find yourself wishing for more variety. A food truck or two could elevate the experience. I suggest stopping for a coffee and bagel at Local Grind before you flights, it’s a short drive away.

Verdict: For those looking to avoid the chaos of LAX or even John Wayne (SNA), Long Beach is a hidden gem. Its low fares, manageable size and outdoor vibe make it a favorite for me.

2. Sacramento International Airport (SMF)

Sacramento isn’t the kind of airport you’d expect to remember, but SMF leaves an impression for all the right reasons.

What Stood Out: Terminal B’s giant red rabbit sculpture (“Leap”) is both whimsical and iconic, instantly lifting your mood. The open design, large windows, and local coffee options give the space personality. Great high ceilings and we had a nice lunch at the sit-down restaurant, Cafeteria 15L.

Ease of Use: As a mid-sized airport, it’s relatively easy to navigate, but getting between terminals can be tricky if you’re short on time.

Room for Improvement: The amenities are decent but not spectacular. It’s functional and pleasant but doesn’t quite go the extra mile for longer layovers.

Verdict: SMF punches above its weight class. For a regional airport, it offers just enough character and efficiency to make it a solid choice for layovers or quick trips.

3. Eugene Airport (EUG)

As a gateway to Oregon, Eugene Airport is small, cozy, and entirely stress-free.

What Stood Out: Its regional charm. The timber-heavy design feels quintessentially Oregon, and the lack of crowds made it one of the most relaxing airport experiences I’ve had in a while.

Ease of Use: Everything about EUG is easy—parking, check-in, security, and getting to your gate. It’s almost impossible to feel rushed here.

Room for Improvement: The amenities are sparse. If you need anything beyond coffee or a quick snack, you’ll be out of luck. The baggage claim area could also use a refresh—it feels dated.

Verdict: EUG is perfect for its purpose: a no-fuss, regional airport that prioritizes simplicity and efficiency.
